The needs and cognition on knowledge and skills of community elderly volunteers on home-based care for the aged

Abstract:Objective To investigate and analyze the influencing factors on the knowledge and skills of elderly volunteers on home-based care for the aged,to provide the reference for the following training.Method A self-designed questionnaire of home-based care knowledge and skills was used to investigate a total of 131 elderly volunteers who had home-based care experience from 5 streets in Beijing.Results The elderly volunteers had lower knowledge and skills in home-based care on 18 items,and higher needs for the relevant training.The knowledge and skills of elder volunteers had correlations with education level,frequency to attend the volunteers activity and whether receiving the care training.Conclusion The elderly volunteers have weak cognitions and high needs on knowledge and skills of home-based care.It is very necessary to improve the quality of home care activity by providing further training and management.
