The influence of home transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation on symptoms,psychology and quality of life in patients with functional consti-pation

Abstract:Objective To investigate the influence of home transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS)on colonic transit activity,symptoms,psy-chology and quality of life in patients with functional constipation (FC). Methods Totally,20 patients with FC received home TENS for 4 weeks and colonic transit test before and after intervention,during which using symptoms of difficulty in defecation,depression anxiety rating scale and quality of life assessment to evaluate patients,and to follow them up for 4 weeks. Results After intervention,colonic transit accelerated,the symptom of constipation improved,the anxiety level and depression level decreased and quality of life decreased improved (P < 0. 01 or P < 0. 05). Conclusion The home TENS can effectively improve the symptoms of FC and their psychologic status to enhance quality of life,which has a certain forward effect and is suitable to be applied in clinic or family.
