The mediating effect of health literacy on self-management and social support in clinic patients with primary hypertension

Abstract:Objective To explore the role of health literacy on social support and self-management in patients with primary hypertension,in order to find a theoretical basis for improving the health literacy of residents and improving the level of self-management.Method A total of 419 patients with primary hypertension were investigated by the Health Literacy Questionnaire for Chronic Patients,the Self-Management Questionnaire and the Social Support Rating Scale.Results The total score of health literacy of hypertensive patients was (102.36 ± 10.93),about 75.89% of patients had health literacy.The total store of self -management was (74.18 ± 9.64) and the total store of social support was (40.44 ± 6.56),which were both in the middle level.Health literacy and social support were positively correlated with self-management (P < 0.01).Health literacy played a mediating role between self-management and social support.Conclusion Health literacy training on patients with primary hypertension can improve the self-management ability of patients and increase the social support of the patients,which is conducive to the patients' condition control.
