Abstract:Objective To evaluate the effects of combination use of Glasgow Coma Scale(GCS)and the Standardized Swallowing Assessment(SSA)in the assessment of choking following Modified Electroconvulsive Therapy(MECT)in psychiatric department. Methods Totally,136 patients treated with MECT were divided into the observation group and the control group. Conventional assessment was used in the control group, while the observation group was assessed by GCS and SSA jointly, then comparison was conducted in two groups in eating, medicine time and choking situation. Results The average time of delaying food(medi-cine)in the observation group was significantly shorter than that of the control group. The number of people eating within 135 minutes after treatment was statisti-cally significant( P ﹤ 0. 05 ). The inicidence of choking in the observation group was significantly lower than that of the control group( P ﹤ 0. 05). Conclusion The GCS and SSA jointly quantitative assessment can effectively should patients’delaying food(medicine)time, and reduce the incidence of cho-king after MECT.
