Abstract:In this study,1,3,6,8-tetrabromocarbazole(1,3,6,8-BCZ),a frequently detected chemical in the environment, was selected as a typical brominated pollutant to explore the removal efficiency and mechanism by transition metal/sulfite system. The results showed that both Fe(Ⅲ)/sulfite and Fe(Ⅱ)/sulfite system could effectively remove 1,3,6,8-BCZ,and the removal efficiencies of 1,3,6,8-BCZ were 65.7%and 53.9%respectively after reaction for 5 min, which could be improved by the increasing concentration of metal ions and sulfite. The elevation of solution pH could also enhance the removal of 1,3,6,8-BCZ,and Cu(Ⅱ)/sulfite system could remove part of 1,.3,6,8-BCZ at pH 7.The presence of humic acid in water sig-nificantly inhibited the removal of 1,3,6,8-BCZ by Fe(Ⅲ)/sulfite and Fe(Ⅱ)/sulfite system, while HCO3-had no significant ef-fect.Quenching experiments and EPR detection proved the presence of free radicals in Fe(Ⅲ)/sulfite system, which played a part role in the removal of 1,3,6,8-BCZ,and metal ion flocculation precipitation owned the main contribution for 1,3,6,8-BCZ removal.Based on the detected intermediate products from GC-MS and density functional theory analysis,it is inferred that the C-N bond breaking and the debromination or substitution of carbon atoms on benzene ring occurred in the degrada-tion process of 1,3,6,8-BCZ.
