Abstract:Carbon quantum dots(CQDS)and their functional materials have been widely used in many fields due to their unique properties. However, the potential toxicity of these modified materials to environmental organisms is not clear. In this study, nitrogen doped carbon quantum dots(N-CQDs)were prepared from orange peel and watermelon peel. The typical gram-negative bacteria Escherichia coli and the gram-positive bacteria Bacillus subtilis were selected as test organism. In this case, the growth curve, colony count, reactive oxygen species(ROS)content, morphology of bacteria were analyzed to investigate the tolerance characteristics of the two bacteria to N-CQDs.At the same time, acute toxicity test was performed with Vibrio fischeri to verify the toxic effects of two biomass-derived N-CQDs on the bacteria. The results showed that with the increase of N-CQDs concentration, the number of bacterial colonies increase slightly;N-CQDs have lower toxicity to Vibrio fischeri. The study indicated that the two kinds of peel-derived N-CQDs were excellent in bio-safety,thus laying a foundation for the application and risk assessment of CQDs.
