Abstract:The effect of ammonia on nitrous oxide (N2O) emission during denitrification of nitrite under anoxic condition with intracellular storage as electron donors were examined by using stable-operated sequencing batch reactor (SBR) which is operated in the stable mode of anaerobic/aerobic/anoxic (A/O/A) and regularly changing to the mode of anaerobic/anoxic (An/ A).The effect of ammonia under 4 different concentrations on N2O emission was investigated by using the microorganisms' characteristic that the low molecular weight organic compound translated into intracellular storage while adding nitrite to the reactor at the initial stage of anoxic phase. The concentration of reactor fed with synthetic wastewater composed of 200 mg/L COD under the initial stage of anaerobic phase, and during the initial stage of anoxic phase, the reactor was added 40 mg/L of nitrate with 0,40,60,80 mg/L of ammonia, respectively. It turned out that the denitrification duration and the N2O emission were promoted with the increase of ammonia's concerntration. The reason may be that the free ammonia has a modest inhibitory on the activity of denitrification'microbe. With the increase of the concentration of ammonia nitrogen, the free ammonia as well as the inhibition was increased. At the same time, when the concentration of NO2--N was close to 0,the N2O's reduction based on intracellular storage was able to take place, which showed that nitrite inhibited the N2O's reduction, and the inhibition concentration was very low.
