Abstract:In this study, magnetic resin (PGMA) was prepared by suspension polymerization using glycidyl methacrylate as monomer, divinybenzene as crosslinking agent, and oleic acid modified Fe3O4 as core. The obtained resin was then quaternized with tfimethylamine hydrochloride. Results showed that the removal of the soluble HA by resin was significantly improved after quaternarization. Its equilibrium uptake capacity was 3.71 mg/g (based on dry weight),which was about 2.5 times higher than that of pristine PGMA,were the initial concentration of HA in solution was 11.2 mg/L (based on total organic carbon). No significant differences were found in terms of molecular weight properties of HA removed by PGMA;however,in the case of quatemized resin, the removal were selectively higher for the fractions with molecular weight higher than 30 kDa and the lower than 3 kDa.Moreover, quaternized resin also exhibited much stronger capability for the removal of the hydrophilic components compared to the pristine one.The removal of HA by PGMA was mainly attributed to the hydrophobic interaction. After quaternarization, the modified resin was able to remove negative charged HA through anion exchange mechanism, and the removal of hydrophilic components was consequently improved.
