Abstract:SO3 in coal-fired flue gas gives rise to blue smoke emission, causing corrosion and blockage of the equipment in the coal fired power plant. In this paper, based on the previous studies and the existing test reports, the mechanism and the present situation of the formation and removal of SO3 in coal-fired flue gas were reviewed and discussed. Results of the review suggested that the conversion of SO2 to SO3 mainly took place in boiler and selective catalytic reduction (SCR),the conversion rate being about 1%~8%,0.5%~2%,respectively.In addition, electrostatic precipitator (ESP),mainly wet ESP will also lead to the conversion.Removal of SO3 took place mostly in the equipment such as air preheater, low temperature electrostatic precipitator, dry desulfurization, wet desulfurization, wet ESP,and the removal efficiencies were 10%~50%,20%~50%,95%,30%~80%,40%~95%,respectively.Furthermore,formation of SO3 and SO3 removal efficiency, being influenced by many factors, very much varied in different equipment.Actually, determination of SO3 formation and removal efficiency in an individual power plant will require in-site measurement.
