Abstract:Frequent algae blooms have been observed in tributary bays of the Three Gorges Reservoir since its initial filling. In order to probe into the relationship between the mixing layer depth and algae blooms in fresh water reservoirs, some artificial enclosure experiments were conducted in the Shennong Creek based on the critical depth theory (CDT).Experimental results showed that the algae grew quickly in the enclosure with Zeu/Zmix (the favorable ratio of euphoric depth to mixing depth) > 1,and the larger the ratio was,the greater the concentration of chlorophyll a would be.Otherwise the algae grew slowly. In conclusion,CDT can interpret the mechanism of algae growth in fresh water reservoirs well.
