Abstract:The sustainable development of membrane separation technology is tenaciously hampered due to membrane fouling.A further augmentation of membrane technology highly depends on an innovation of novel antifouling membrane materials.Membrane modification,as an alternative approach to enhancing the antifouling properties of existing membrane materials, has attracted great attentions in recent decades.Graphene, owing to its unique physicochemical characteristics, has been widely used for membrane modification in the past years. The paper summarized the features of graphene and its derivatives, and typical strategies for membrane modification.Research progress of membrane modification using graphene-based materials in the areas of reverse osmosis, forward osmosis,nanofiltration,ultra-/microfiltration,pervaporation,and conductive membranes was elaborated. In the end, prospective tendencies for further research development were proposed, aiming to propel the application of novel membrane materials.
