Abstract:Mentha spp.contains different allelochemicals, which may inhibit or promote the growth of microalgae, achieving control of microalgal bloom or regulation of commercial microalgae production. This study investigated the effect of Mentha aquatica L.extract on growth characteristics of three microalgal strains including Microcystis aeruginosa,Chlorella pyrenoidosa and Scenedesmus sp.It was found that Mentha extract inhibited the growth of M.aeruginosa (cyanobacteria),with inhibition rate up to 97%,while promoting effects were observed on the growth of C.pyrenoidosa and Scenedesmus sp.(both of which belong to green algae),with maximum promotion rates of 552% and 176%,respectively.Dry weight of the tested algal strains (C.pyrenoidosa and Scenedesmus sp.) increased maximally by 0.60 g/L and 0.62 g/L.It can be seen that the effects of Mentha extract on growth characteristics of different algae species are different.By adding Mentha extract in the cultivating medium, growth of the microalgae can be controlled.
