Abstract:Treatment of pharmaceutical wastewater containing naphthalene was studied by the bench-scale experiment with the presence of naphthalene and glucose matrix as the sole carbon source. At the first, aerobic activated sludge was acclimatized by means of increasing the concentration gradient of the specific pollutant, and then the naphthalene degradation characteristics and microbial properties in the process of sludge acclimatization were investigated.Summarily, the experiment showed that the naphthalene had inhibitive effects on the microbiology, but after seven cycles (2 months long) enhanced acclimatization the microbes of degradation sludge got adapted to naphthalene which was as sole carbon source. The main bacterium in the sludge is Acidovorax (genera of acid bacteria),which was able to break down organic naphthalene of the concentration up to 60 rag/L,with the naphthalene degradation rate up from 89% to more than 93.3% steadily;and the SOUR value could be above 9.58 mgO2/(gMLSS·h),so the results of the study could be applied to degradation of naphthalene for advanced treatment of pharmaceutical wastewater.
