PBDEs/PFASs Residues in Groundwater of a Typical Agricultural Region in North China

Abstract:Persistent organic substances (POPs) pollution in groundwater, which directly jeopardizes human health, has become one of the serious environmental problems in the world. In this paper,a typical vegetable production base of a region in Tianjin City was chosen for investigating the status quo of POPs pollution, particularly with respect to polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) and perfluorinated compounds (PFASs),focusing on their distributions in the groundwater,as well as their characteristics. The investigation suggested that PBDEs concentration in the groundwater was ranging from 0 to 33.71 ng/L (the average:5.43 ng/L) while the PBDEs concentration of the soil in the average was 10.34 ng/g d.w.,higher than that of groundwater, which indicated that there existed the risk of PBDEs infiltrating into groundwater from soil with rainfall.BDE-209 was detected in approximately 75% of the groundwater, which suggested that the land of this agricultural region was more likely polluted by the high bromine generation, the flame retardant products;furthermore, total PFASs concentration in groundwater ranged from 0.321 to 8.284 ng/L (the average:2.413 ng/L) with all of the ten categories of PFASs being detected, and the main ingredients were the short carbon chain of perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) with concentration, from 0 to 2.38 ng/L,as well as the long carbon chain of perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) with concentration from 0.025 to 3.94 ng/L.
