Abstract:To expand the path of harmless utilization of solid waste, the application of water-storage pits beside trees was studied by experiments. The air voids and water absorption rate of construction waste and organic waste were tested in laboratory, and then the analysis of these wastes as the sponge alternative was conducted.Construction wastes, household wastes and residual branches and leaves were used as the filling material to build water-storage pits beside trees respectively to observe and test the difference. Results showed that household wastes enjoyed obvious advantage and construction wastes ranked at the bottom in terms of air voids.Calculation showed that the air voids of the three wastes were all up to 25% in the case of natural loose accumulation. With the increase of particle size, the air voids of solid wastes increased. In the index of water absorption, the household wastes had obvious advantages, and the residual branches and leaves were closely followed. The field experiments showed that the water-storage pits beside trees could delay the surface runoff and accumulate more water. The compost with water could improve the content of organic matter in the soil. The compost can do help to the sponge city construction and water saving cultivation through water-storage pits beside trees.
