Study Progress on Biodegradation of MTBE

Abstract：MTBE (methyl tert-butyl ether,MTBE) as a gasoline oxygenate,which has been widely used in China,can significantly increase the octane number of gasoline products and improve the combustion efficiency.Because of its high solubility in water,the groundwater can be easily contaminated once the leak.Therefore,the development of efficient and easy removal of MTBE contamination in water is imperative.This paper mainly summarizes the present knowledge about the MTBE biodegradation technology,especially about the development of microbial degradation technology.This review also aims to propose the prospect of future research so as to provide reference.
