Abstract:In the heating period,20 groups of urban fine particulate matter (PM2.5) samples were collected at a typical traffic crossing in Taiyuan City,China everyday around 8:30,11:30,14:30,17:30,December 19-23,2011.By using the electron probe X-ray microanalysis (EPMA),1 678 particles were characterized based on their secondary electron images (SEIs) and X-ray spectra. Results showed that mineral dust and carbon particles accounted for more than 80%,aged (or reacted) mineral dust particles containing sulfate were 2.5 times higher than the nitrate-containing ones in number. Both elemental carbon (EC) and aged (or reacted) mineral dust particles had significant changes (P<0.05) in relative number abundance at four sampling times in one day while primary mineral dust, organic carbon (OC) and Fe-rich particles had no statistically changes at the different sampling times (P>0.05).There was a poor correlation between OC and EC content and the number ratio of OC to EC was larger than 2,indicating that PM2.5 related to traffic in Taiyuan were complex in components with diverse sources, with mineral dust particles mainly originating from construction and road fugitive dust,EC mainly from primary burning and motor vehicle exhaust while OC from both primary and secondary products, and Fe-rich particles were mostly emitted from vehicles since their contents were relatively stable in the daytime.
