Abstract:The hair modified with NaOH was studied to investigate its potential for adsorption of methylene blue (MB).The characteristics of hair and modified hair were characterized with scanning electron microscope and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR).The effects of initial pH,adsorbent dosage, initial dye concentration and contact time on the adsorption capacity of the modified hair were evaluated. The results showed that the removal efficiency of MB could be improved with the NaOH modified hair by oxidizing disulfide bond of cystine and making its surface with negative electric charge. At the adsorbent dosage of 0.5 g/L,initial pH of 10.0,and temperature of 298 K,the adsorption process reached equilibrium within 120 min, fitting to the pseudo-second-order model. The maximum adsorption capacity calculated by best fitting Langmuir isotherm model was 515.46 mg/g.Furthermore,the simple adsorbent preparation method and regeneration ability implied the hair modified with NaOH was a promising biosorbent for MB removal in wastewater treatment.
