Effect of Turbulence on the Activated Sludge Properties and Microbial Metabolites

Abstract：Turbulence is an important dynamic factor for mass and energy transfer in bioreactor,which affects activated sludge characteristics and microbial metabolism directly.It is also one of the key factors for the performance and energy consumption of activated sludge system.In this study,the physical,chemical and biological characteristics of activated sludge such as particle size,settling ability,biomass activity were analyzed under different turbulence conditions.The granulation,the extracellular polymeric substances,and soluble organic products of activated sludge were compared under various turbulence conditions as well.The mechanism of turbulence affecting activated sludge characteristics and microbial metabolism was discussed.Based on analysis,the research directions were given.
