Abstract：The new approach,which is widely adopted by some count ries andregions to develop sediment quality criteria based on the biological ef fect database,is reviewed according to the newest information on developing sedi ment quality criteria in Canada,Florida(USA),Australia,New Zealand and Hong Kong Special Administrativ Region.The new advances of this approach on development o f sediment quality criteria and application are also evaluated.
