Abstract:To investigate the hydraulic design characteristics of the chute section in high-head spillways,a combined energy dissipation method utilizing hydraulic jump and stepped energy dissipation was employed.Research showed that a slotted design in the chute section was more conducive to flow control and energy dissipation;a larger slot width resulted in less control over the vortex zone distribution.Although the slot width parameter did not alter the trend of flow velocity changes along the steps,it affected the node where peak flow velocity occurred on the steps;a larger slot width corresponded to a lower flow velocity level. The diffusion rate influenced the distribution of the vortex zone within the stilling basin. As the diffusion rate increased, the bottom flow velocity in the basin decreased. With a diffusion rate of 1.32-1.64,the energy dissipation rate of the stilling basin stabilized at 74.6%.Comprehensive consideration suggested that a chute slot width of 30 mm and a stilling basin width of 16.5 m represented the optimal scheme. The findings provide a reference for optimizing hydraulic jump and stepped energy dissipation designs in spillways under high-head conditions.
