Abstract:A surface orifice overflow weir with free-fall jet energy dissipation is adopted for the Ulog Arch Dam in Bosnia and Herzegovina.Using FLOW-3D software,a comprehensive model including the upstream reservoir, arch dam,and downstream plunge pool was established to study hydraulic characteristics such as flow regime, jet trajectory distance, and impact pressure in the plunge pool. The study revealed that the flared pier caused lateral contraction and significant longitudinal elongation of the flow, forming a sheet-like jet with effective energy dissipation.Under different working conditions,as the gate opening increased, the impact zone expanded, while the flow velocity at the flared pier and the impact velocity at the water entry point decreased overall. The deviation between the simulated discharge and formula-calculated results was minimal, verifying the accuracy of the simulation. This numerical simulation provides strong support for the engineering design.
