Abstract:Backwater calculation is one of the key components in flood control evaluations for cross-river bridges, directly affecting the safety and stability of bridges during flood periods.Currently, empirical formulas from highway and railway standards are commonly used for backwater calculations. In this paper,a two-dimensional hydrodynamic model was introduced as an additional method, and the results of these three methods for a proposed major bridge were compared. The results showed that the outcomes of Highway empirical formula method and 2D Hydrodynamic model method were relatively close, while Railway engineering empirical formula method yielded the smallest result due to the use of larger coefficients, and Highway empirical formula method produced the largest result. It is recommended that the backwater calculation process in flood control evaluations be determined through a comprehensive comparative analysis of the three methods. This analytical process can provide technical support for backwater calculations in cross-river bridge projects.
