Abstract:Objective To compare lumbar bone marrow fat and water content between patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus(T2DM)and nondiabetic controls. Methods Forty-five patients with T2DM who were admitted to the Department of Endocrinology from December 2020 to December 2021 were selected as the research group, and forty-six nondiabetic individuals were selected as the control group at the same time, and the changes in lumbar bone marrow fat and water content quantified by magnetic resonance imaging(MRI)were compared between the two groups. Results There were no significant differences between groups in sex, age, disease duration, body mass index(BMI),or blood pressure(P>0.05).Fasting blood glucose, glycated hemoglobin(HbA1c),and insulin resistance index were significantly higher in the diabetic group than in controls(P<0.01).Lipid profiles, and measures of body fat and muscle content did not differ significantly between groups(P>0.05).Fat signal values measured in lumbar levels L1-L3 were significantly higher in diabetic patients than in nondiabetic subjects(P<0.05).Water signal values measured in lumbar levels L1-L4 were significantly lower in diabetic patients compared with controls(P<0.05).Conclusion Patients with T2DM exhibit increased lumbar bone marrow fat signal and decreased water signal compared with nondiabetic individuals.
