Development and evaluation of an operating room intervention protocol based on risk assessment and the 4R crisis management framework

Abstract:Objective To develop an operating room(OR)intervention protocol integrating structured risk assessment with the 4R crisis management framework(Reduction,Readiness,Response,Recovery),and to evaluate its effectiveness.Methods Totally 34 OR medical staff and 76 surgical patients from May 2023 to May 2024 were assigned to either conventional OR management(routine group,12 staff;34 patients)or the OR intervention protocol based on risk assessment and the 4R crisis management framework(observation group,22 staff;42 patients),according to the management approach applied.A 2-month intervention was performed,the aim was to compare the satisfaction,quality of life,comfort,risk awareness,emergency capacity,intervention quality,and theoretical and operational skills assessment scores.Results After the intervention,the medical staff in observation group had significantly improved scores of theoretical and operational skills assessment,intervention quality,emergency capacity,and risk awareness than those in the routine group(P<0.05).The patients in the observation group presented significantly better scores of comfort,quality of life,and satisfaction than those in the routine group(P<0.05).Conclusion An OR intervention protocol grounded in risk assessment and the 4R crisis management framework significantly enhances staff emergency capacity and risk awareness,improves the intervention quality,and increases patient comfort and quality of life.
