Abstract:Objective To evaluate the correlation between serum 25-hydroxyvitamin(25(OH)D)levels and body mass index(BMI)in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus(T2DM).Methods A total of 442 adult patients hospitalized with T2DM at the Endocrine Department,Hebei General Hospital in 2019 were included in the study.Demographics and clinical variables were collected and analyzed.25(OH)D deficiency was defined with Vitamin D levels below 20 ng/ml.Based on the Vitamin D levels, patients were classified into Vitamin D deficiency group(303/442,68.5%)and normal Vitamin D group(139/442,31.5%).Subgroup analysis based on the BMI was conducted. In addition, patients were subgrouped based on Vitamin D levels and BMI in male and female groups. Results Among all patients,a significantly higher BMI was found in the Vitamin D deficiency group than the normal Vitamin D group(P<0.05).Subgroup analysis showed a similar result in female patients(P<0.05),but no significant difference in the BMI among male patients(P>0.05).In the Vitamin D deficiency group,BMI was comparable between male and female patients(P>0.05).Correlation analysis showed that among all patients, and female subgroup, there was a negative correlation between Vitamin D and BMI.Regardless of adjustments for confounders,BMI was an independent risk factor for low Vitamin D levels in the overall T2DM patients, and female T2DM patients, which was not detected in male patients. Conclusion BMI is associated with low Vitamin D levels in T2DM patients, and this relationship is statistically significant only in women.
