Effect of progressive dose-adding of alprazolam on elderly patients with chronic tinnitus

Abstract：Objective To investigate the effect of progressive dose-adding of alprazolam on elderly patients with chronic tinnitus.Methods A total of 96 elderly patients with chronic tinnitus treated in our hospital from January 2019 to January 2021 were assigned into observation group(n=48)and control group(n=48)according to computer random grouping method.All patients were managed by conventional therapy,and those in observation group were additionally treated with progressive dose-adding of alprazolam.The aim was to compare the scores of Tinnitus Handicap Inventory(THI),Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index(PSQI),Self-rating Anxiety Scale(SAS),Visual Analogue Scale(VAS),tinnitus loudness,hearing change,curative effect,incidence of adverse reactions.Results The overall effective rate in the observation group was significantly higher than that in the control group(64.58％ vs 41.67％,P＜0.05).Before treatment,there was no significant difference in the THI,SAS and PSQI scores between groups(P＞0.05).After treatment,THI,SAS and PSQI scores in the both groups were significantly decreased(P＜0.05),which in the observation group were significantly lower than those of control group(P＜0.05).There was no significant difference in the VAS score before treatment between groups(P＞0.05).VAS score in the both groups was significantly decreased after treatment(P＜0.05),the decrease in the observation group was more prevalent compared with the control group(P＜0.05).Before treatment,there was no significant difference in the tinnitus loudness score and the pure tone audiometry(PTA)threshold between groups(both P＞0.05).After treatment,tinnitus loudness score and PTA threshold in the both groups were significantly decreased(both P＜0.05),the decrease in the observation group was more common than the control group(both P＜0.05).The incidence of adverse reactions between groups was comparable(P＞0.05).Conclusion For elderly patients with chronic tinnitus,progressive dose-adding of alprazolam has significant therapeutic effects,which can effectively improve anxiety,sleep conditions and tinnitus,reduce tinnitus loudness,promote hearing recovery,and reduce the impact of chronic tinnitus on daily life,showing a good safety.
