Abstract:Objective To compare the effectiveness of the modified liquid-powder mixture bone cement versus conventional bone cement used in the percutaneous kyphoplasty(PKP)for thoracic osteoporotic compression fractures,as well as their impact on the Visual Analogue Scale(VAS)score and the Oswestry Dysfunction Index(ODI).Methods A total of 112 patients with thoracic vertebral osteoporotic compression fractures admitted to our hospital from 2019 to May 2022 were selected as the study subjects. They were randomly assigned into the control group and study group according to the principles of balance and randomization, with 56 cases in each group. The patients in both groups received PKP,with the use of conventional bone cement in the control group, and modified liquid-powder mixture bone cement in the study group. The sagittal plane index,Cobb angle,VAS score, and ODI of the injured vertebra in the two groups were compared at 2 hours,3 months, and 6 months after the operation. The bone cement dispersion in the vertebral body and the incidence of complications in the two groups were compared. Results At 3 months and 6 months after the operation, the sagittal plane index of injured vertebra in the study group was significantly higher than that of the control group, and its Cobb angle was significantly lower(P<0.05).The VAS score and ODI of the study group were significantly lower than those of the control group(P<0.05).The dispersion level of bone cement in the vertebral bodies of the control group and the study group was mostly graded in levelⅣ,without a significant difference(P>0.05).There was no significant difference in the incidence of complications between the two groups(P>0.05).Conclusion In PKP treatment of thoracic osteoporotic compression fractures, the modified liquid-powder mixture bone cement can obtain the same distribution as the conventional bone cement, but improves the sagittal plane index and Cobb angle of the injured vertebra, reduces postoperative pain, and restores lumbar function without a significant increase in complications.
