Effect of core stability exercise combined with Chinese herbal hot compress based on midnight-noon ebb-flow on short-term clinical symptoms in patients with lumbar disc herniation of Qi stagnation and blood stasis type

Abstract：Objective To investigate the effect of core stability exercise(CSE)combined with Chinese herbal hot compress based on midnight-noon ebb-flow on short-term clinical symptoms in patients with lumbar disc herniation(LDH)of Qi stagnation and blood stasis type.Methods Totally 105 patients with LDH(Qi stagnation and blood stasis type)admitted to our hospital from September 2021 to March 2023 were randomised 1∶1∶1 to receive CSE(CSE group)or Chinese herbal hot compress based on midnight-noon ebb-flow(hot compress group)or CSE+Chinese herbal hot compress based on midnight-noon ebb-flow(combined group)once daily.The treatment continued for 8 weeks(1 week for 5 days).On day 0,and at weeks 1 and 2,the clinical effect was assessed by Japanese Orthopedic Association(JO A)and Oswestry Disability Index(ODI).Results None of the JOA and ODI scores differed significantly among the three groups between day 0 and week 1(P＞0.05).At week 2,the combined group presented significantly higher subjective symptoms,signs,activities of daily living(ADL)scores,total scores of JOA,and significantly lower pain,single function,individual comprehensive function scores,total scores of ODI than the CSE group and hot compress group(all P＜0.05).The improvement rate of clinical symptoms was significantly higher in the combined group than in the CSE group and hot compress group(X2=6.824,8.770,P＜0.05).Conclusion For patients with LDH(Qi stagnation and blood stasis type),CSE combined with Chinese herbal hot compress based on midnight-noon ebb-flow can effectively relieve short-term clinical symptoms and improve lumbar function.
