Therapeutic effects of Er:YAG laser adjuvant GTR on degree Ⅱ root bifurcations in periodontium
Abstract:Objective To investigate the therapeutic effects of Er:YAG (erbium;yttrium-aluminum-garnet) laser adjuvant guided tissue regeneration (GTR) on degree Ⅱ root bifurcations in periodontium. Methods Twenty-four patients with moderate to severe chronic periodontitis including twenty-six mandibular molars and twenty-eight Ⅱ°root bifurcations in periodontium were randomly divided into experimental group(Er:YAG laser + GTR)and control group (GTR),and the involved teeth were examined by cone beam CT (CBCT) before operation and at 1 year after operation, moreover the changes of clinical parameters and CBCT results were observed before and after treatment. Results Before treatment, there were no significant differences in clinical indexes between two groups (P>0.05).However the PD values at 1 year after treatment were significantly decreased in both groups (P<0.05),and clinical attachment levels (CAL) were increased significantly (P<0.05). The CBCT results showed that the vertical bone defect and horizontal bone defect were significantly improved in both groups. As compared with those in control group, the attachment levels were significantly improved in experimental group (P<0.05).Conclusion Er:YGA laser can improve the therapeutic effects of GTR surgery on degreeⅡroot bifurcations in mandibular molars.
