Effects of ganglioside on serum inflammatory cytokines and MMP-9 in neonates with hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy

Abstract：Objective To observe the effects of ganglioside on serum inflammatory cytokines and matrix metalloproteinases (MMP-9) in neonates with hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE).Methods A total of 106 neonates with HIE were divided into observation group (n =6) and control group (n =45) according to the order of visiting doctors.The patients in control group were treated by conventional therapy combined with mild sub-hypothermia + citicoline injection,however,the patients in observation group were treated by conventional therapy combined with sub-hypothermia + monostalotetrahexosylgangliside sodium for 10 days.The serum levels of inflammation-related factors including interleukin-6 (IL-6),IL-10,tumor necrosis factor-o (TNF-α) and IL-1 β,MMP-9 and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) before and after treatment were detected and compared between two groups,moreover,the neonatal neurobehavioral assay (NBNA) was performed.In addition,the total effective rates were statistically calculated for both groups.Results The total effective rate in observation group was 80.33％,which was significantly higher than that (64.44％) in control group (P ＜ 0.05).During treatment,patient's reflex,sucking,muscular tension and consciousness recovery time in observation group were obviously earlier than those in control group (P ＜ 0.05).After treatment the serum levels of TNF-α,IL-6,IL-1β,IL-10 were obviously decreased in both groups,moreover,the levels of MMP and VEGF were also decreased,however,the NBNA scores were significantly increased (P ＜ 0.05).After treatment the levels of TNF-α,IL-6,IL-1β,IL-10,MMP,VEGF in observation group were obviously lower than those in control group (P ＜ 0.05),however,the NBNA scores in observation group were significantly higher than those in control group (P ＜ 0.05).Conclusion The ganglioside has definite therapeutic effects on HIE,which may be correlated to the regulation of inflammation cytokine.
