Abstract:Objective To investigate the thyroid functional status in middle aged patients without thyroid diseases by detecting the serum levels of free triiodothyronine ( FT3 ) , serum free thyroxine ( FT4 ) and thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH).Methods The serum levels of FT3,FT4 and TSH were detected and analyzed by electrochemiluminescence method in 181 middle aged patients without thyroid diseases .Results The incidence of decrease of FT 3 and FT4 contents was 19.9%,7.7%, respectively, and the probability of increase of TSH was 34.3%.The levels of FT3 in females were significantly higher than those of males ( P <0.05),however,there were no significant differences in the levels of FT4 betweem females and males ( P >0.05).Furthermore there were significant differences in the incidence of abnormality FT 3, TSH between males and females ( P <0.05).The levels of FT3 would gradually decrease along with the growth of patient ’s age ( P <0.05).There were significant differences in the levels of TSH among different age groups ( P <0.05).There was a significant difference in the incidence of decrease of FT 3 contents among different age groups ( P <0.05).However the levels of FT4 were not changed along with the growth of patient ’ s age ( P >0.05).Conclusion The incidence of thyroid function abnormality is higher in middle aged patients along with the growth of patient ’ s age, which manifests mainly the decrease of FT3 levels and increase of TSH levels .
