Effect of IVIS Service on Driver Fixation Characteristics

Abstract：In order to examine the effect of IVIS ( in-vehicle information systems ) service on driver ’ s fixa-tion characteristics , data of fixations were collected while a real -vehicle experiment was conducted.The dis-tribution range and position of fixations were analyzed under different conditions.After using IVIS , driver ’ s fixation area in the road ahead decreases significantly and fixation position is closer to the ground , while fixa-tion duration reveals no significance.The distribution change of fixations was compared by setting IVIS service in various mounting positions.Results show that fixation distribution area and fixation ratio in the road ahead change the greatest in position 1, which has the smallest value in position 3 and the middle value in position 2.Based on the above phenomena , it shows that the information acquired from the road ahead to drivers de-creases of which the importance relative to other areas reduces.However , the difficulty of information extrac-tion reveals no significance.In addition , the proper position order for installing IVIS was position 3 , 2 , 1.
