Abstract:Objective To explore the association between dual sensory impairment(DSI)and cognitive function in rural elder-ly,providing a scientific basis for preventing cognitive decline in this population. Methods From January to October 2023,a convenience sampling method was used to survey rural elderly in Zunyi City,Guizhou Province.General information ques-tionnaires,self-assessment sensory function scales, and Mini-Mental State Examination(MMSE)scores were collected.Bi-nary logistic regression analysis was used to assess the relationship between dual sensory function and cognitive function. Results A total of 4 158 questionnaires were distributed, with 3 905 valid questionnaires returned, resulting in a valid re-sponse rate of 93.9%.Among the 3 905 elderly participants,267(6.8%)had DSI,and among those with DSI,162(13.8%)had cognitive impairment.Binary logistic stepwise regression analysis showed female gender, advanced age, living alone, not participating in social activities, and DSI were risk factors for cognitive impairment in rural elderly(P<0.05).The incidence of cognitive impairment in rural elderly with DSI was 3.516 times higher than that in rural elderly with normal dual sensory function(OR=3.516,95%CI:2.704-4.572,P<0.05).Conclusion There is an association between dual sensory function and cognitive function in rural elderly.Impaired dual sensory function increases the risk of cognitive impair-ment in rural elderly.Early screening and intervention of dual sensory function in these individuals can help reduce the risk of cognitive impairment.
