Independent and combined effects of smartphone addiction and academic burnout on suicidal ideation among college students

Abstract:Objective This study aimed to explore the independent and combined effects of smartphone addiction and academ-ic burnout on suicidal ideation among college students.Methods A total of 3 184 students from a college in Jiangxi Province were selected for measurement of smartphone addiction,academic burnout,and suicidal ideation.The correlations among the three variables were analyzed.Results The detection rates of smartphone addiction,academic burnout,and suicidal ide-ation among college students were 21.33%,31.94%,and 9.30%,respectively.The analysis of independent effects re-vealed that the average score of suicidal ideation among college students with smartphone addiction was 2.78 points higher(95%CI:2.54-3.03)than those without smartphone addiction,and the risk of suicidal ideation occurrence was 3.97 times higher(95%CI:3.11-5.09)for students with smartphone addiction compared to those without.Similarly,the av-erage score of suicidal ideation among college students with academic burnout was 1.92 points higher(95%CI 1.70-2.13)than those without academic burnout,and the risk of suicidal ideation occurrence was 3.63 times higher(95%CI:2.84-4.64)for students with academic burnout compared to those without.The analysis of combined effects showed that com-pared to college students without smartphone addiction and academic burnout,the average score of suicidal ideation increased by 1.12 points(95%CI:0.86-1.38)for students without smartphone addiction but with academic burnout,by 2.10 points(95%CI:1.73-2.46)for students with smartphone addiction but without academic burnout,and by 3.63 points(95%CI:3.33-3.92)for students with both smartphone addiction and academic burnout.The risk of suicidal ideation oc-currence for students with both smartphone addiction and academic burnout,without smartphone addiction but with academ-ic burnout,and with smartphone addiction but without academic burnout was 7.27 times(95%CI:5.33-9.93),3.04 times(95%CI:2.18-4.23),and 3.60 times(95%CI:2.38-5.46)higher,respectively,as compared with those with-out smartphone addiction and academic burnout.Conclusion Smartphone addiction and academic burnout have certain inde-pendent effects on the score and occurrence risk of suicidal ideation among college students,as well as certain combined effects.
