Abstract:Objective To explore the effect of the FOCUS-PDCA model in addressing common factors contributing to blood reflux during gravity intravenous infusion. Methods To intervene for the long blood feflux during gravity intravenous infusion caused by patient movement, such as toileting, getting out of bed.The study compared the incidence of prolonged blood reflux and its related complications, such as infusion blockage, swelling, phlebitis, infusion incompetence,extravasation-before ( June 1,2022-October 30,2022) and after FOCUS-PDCA model management ( Nov.1,2022-March 30,2023) implementing the FOCUS-PDCA model. The comparison included 763 cases with 3821 infusions instacnes before the intervention and 811 patients with 3923 infusions instances after the intervention, and the incidence of patient complaints related to blood reflux was analyzed. Results After the implementation of the FOCUS-PDCA model, the rate of patient blood reflux decreased significantly from 11.66% to 2.34% (P<0.05).Conclusions The FOCUS-PDCA model could reduce the occurrence of prolonged blood reflux during gravity intravenous infusion as well as the associated complications such as blockage of infusion tubes, swelling, phlebitis, poor infusion flow, and extravasation, but also this model could reduce medical complaints, and improve the patient experience and satifaction with medical services.
