The level and influencing factors of oral health literacy in patients with periodontitis

Abstract：Objective To investigate the level and influencing factors of oral health literacy in patients with periodontitis.Methods A total of 230 patients with periodontitis who were treated in the Stomatology Department of the Affiliated Stomatology Hospital of Nanjing Medical University from August 2022 to February 2023 were selected by convenience sampling method.They were investigated with Oral Health Literacy Adults Questionnaire for Periodontitis Patients(OHL-PAQ),Self-efficacy Scale for Self-care(SESS)and Perceived Social Support Scale(PSSS).Results The total score of the OHL-PAQ was 15.73±1.16,the total score of the SESS was 55.17±4.86;the total score of the PSSS was 51.35±2.17.The influencing factors were education level,average monthly income of family,occupation type,understanding of periodontal disease,the self-efficacy of oral health care and social support(P＜0.05).Conclusions The oral health literacy of periodontitis patients was generally below the middle level.Healthcare professionals can make targeted treatment and management plans based on the above influencing factors to improve the oral health literacy of periodontitis patients.
