Imaging of the visual pathway damage in neuromyelitis optica

Abstract:Neuromyelitis optica(NMO)is a central nervous system autoimmune disorder characterized by recurrent inflammatory demyelination and severe attacks due to the damage of the optic nerve and spinal cord.Optic neuritis is one of the typical clinical features of NMO. The optic neuritis in NMO patients is usually severe, bilateral, with high rate of recurrence and poor prognosis.Accumulative evidence has shown multiple involvements in different parts of visual pathway. However, the underlying mechanism is still not very clear.Studies on visual pathway of NMO with conventional and advanced MRI techniques and optical coherence tomography were reviewed to improve the understanding of the visual injury meachanism.
