Abstract:Primary trigeminal neuralgia (PTN) is one of the most common cranial nerve diseases, which is character-ized by paroxysmal intense facial pain in one or more branches of the trigeminal nerve. The reason of PTN is stills unclear. Three dimension fast imaging employing steady state acquisition (3D-FIESTA) can be used to observe the morphological changes of nerve and its surrounding structures, and may provide pathogenesis basis of PTN. Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) is able to quantitative evaluate the condition of myelin, and can provide functional background for PTN. Combining 3D-FIESTA and DTI can provide valuable information for the pathogenesis, functional changes, and prognosis of PTN. This article is to re-view the research and application of MRI in evaluating morphology and functional changes in PTN patients.
