Abstract:While carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is a peripheral neuropathy, neurophysiological researches suggest that the irregular afferent signalling occurring in CTS produces functional and structural neuroplasticity, which might in-volve in sensory and motion dysfunction of fingers innervated by median nerve. The functional imaging techniques, includ-ing blood-oxygen level dependent functional magnetic resonance imaging and magnetoencephalography were employed to evaluate the cortical plasticity and its association with the clinical symptoms for CTS. This may provide the basis for clini-cal classification of CTS, and contribute to guidance on the individualized treatment. The research progress on the function-al neuroimaging of CTS is reviewed.
