Abstract:Fluoine-18 fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography (18F-FDG PET) combines the advantage of morphological and functional imaging. It can be used to evaluate effects of cancer therapy by observing the changes of the FDG uptake degree. 18F-FDG PET has gained increasing popularity in neoadjuvant chemotherapy and in the comprehensive treatment of reccurent/metastatic breast cancer. In this review we focused on the role of 18F-FDG PET (PET/CT) in neoadjuvant chemotherapy of primary breast cancer and the treatment of recurrent and metastatic breast cancer. Furthermore, we made a summary and outlook of the other new appearing agents which have attracted increasing interest, such as 18F-FES, cell hypoxia, cell proliferation, and Her-2/neu.
