Abstract:Lumbar disc degeneration is the main reason of low back pain. MRI is the most commonly used technology to evaluate the health status of the intervertebral disc. Novel MRI techniques, such as diffusion-weighted imaging, T 2 mapping imaging, T1ρ-weighted imaging, sodium MRI, cartilage delayed gadolinium-enhanced MRI and magnetic resonance spectroscopy imaging, are ingenious in quantifying the alterations in collagen structure, water and proteoglycan loss of disc degeneration. In this article we reviewed the progresses of integrated magnetic resonance imaging technique in early detecting disc degeneration, the advantages and disadvantages of each method were discussed.
