Abstract:The petrous apex is a complex anatomic region of the central skull base, which is surrounded by a number of important vascular and neural structures. As the complementary cross-sectional imaging techniques for revealing the anatomy and lesions of this region, CT and MRI play an important role in diagnosing and characterizing of diseases of the region, as well as aiding in surgical planning. Petrous apex lesions can be classified into pseudo lesions, developmental lesions of bone, traumatic lesions, congenital diseases, inflammatory lesions, vascular lesions, benign and malignant tumors. The imaging features of these lesions were reviewed in this article.
