Abstract:Pelvic organ prolapse(POP)is a kind of disease that causes the female pelvic organs descend because of the damage of pelvic floor supporting tissue, which severely affects the quality of life of women. The main causes of connective tissue damage are decreased extracellular matrix content and structural damage.Collagen is a major component of the pelvic floor extracellular matrix and is secreted by human vaginal fibroblasts. The dysfunction of human vaginal fibroblasts plays an important role in the pathological process of POP.Examples of this dysfunction include oxidative stress, mitochondrial dysfunction, protein homeostasis imbalance, decreased cell proliferation and increased apoptosis in human vaginal fibroblasts. This article reviews the molecular mechanism underlying the dysfunction of human vaginal fibroblasts and its role in the development of POP.
