Study on the apomixis in Shanxi Mianhetao walnut

Abstract：Shanxi Mianhetao is the common name of walnut grown in Shanxi province, which has a long cultivation history. Although a number of research programs about seed plant apomixis have been carried out around the world,the information is very limited in walnut. This paper presented the results of the Shanxi Mianhetao' walnut apomixis research. The main results were as follows: (1) Bagged isolation showed that there were some definite capacities of apomixis in Shanxi Mianhetao walnut among the 4 cultivars studied. The apomixis rate averaged 20.4% with the highest being 67.4%. Statistics analysis indicated that apomixis varied significantly among the 4 cultivars grown in different areas. It suggests that there are some specific apomixis cultivars existing in the Shanxi Mianhetao walnut. (2) The apomixis embryo in Shanxi Mianhetao walnut is suggested to be of the parthenogenesis.(3)The isoenzyme zymogram uniformity of peroxydase (POD) in apomixis seedlings of Shanxi Mianhetao walnut was higher than the offspring of naturally pollinated ones. The possibility of breeding new apomixis walnut cultivar is discussed.
