Abstract:[Objective]We present the results of an experimental study on the growth and yield of greenhouse celery in response to different aerated irrigations.[Method]Pot experiments were conducted in a greenhouse with subsurface seepage irrigation (S) and subsurface drip irrigation (D). Each irrigation had two treatments: aeration (A) and non-aeration (B); the control was furrow irrigation (CK) without aeration. For each treatment, we measured the growth, yield, soil moisture distribution and water use efficiency.[Result]The yield under aerated subsurface seepage irrigation was 10.6% higher (p<0.05) than that under subsurface drip irrigation without aeration, and the aeration did not lead to a significant increase in yield. Compared with the drip irrigation without aeration, aerated seepage irrigation increased the yield by 12.8% (p<0.01). The moisture distribution in soil varied with irrigation method. Compared to the drip irrigation, the seepage irrigation increased the 0~20 cm water content by 9.6% (p<0.05) while reduced the 20~40 cm water content by 12.9% (p<0.05). Since celery is a shallowrooting crop, seepage irrigation is more suitable to meet its demand for water, thereby having a high water use efficiency. The differences between yield under seepage and drip irrigations was due to the differences in plant weight rather than the petioles of each plant.[Conclusion]A combined use of subsurface seepage irrigation and aeration can noticeably improve the yield and WUE of greenhouse celery.
