Distribution of Root Length Density and Water Use Efficiency of Maize with Alternative Furrow Irrigation
Abstract:In order to verify the distribution of root length density and water use efficiency (WUE) of maize with the alternative furrow irrigation (AFI) and conventional furrow irrigation (CFI), the spatial distribution of root length density and crop water utilization of maize with AFI and CFI were investigated. Results indicated that maize root length density presented exponential distribution in both horizontal and vertical directions. AFI increased the horizontal growth and vertical depth of maize roots. Maize roots in ridge zone under CFI were mainly distributed in soil layer of 20-60 cm. Compared with CFI, WUE of maize with AFI increased by 5%. Therefore, AFI could promote maize root water uptake from deep soil layer, and increase WUE of crops with deficit irrigation.
