Abstract:The experiments were carried out under plastic mulched drip irrigation to study the effects of the space of drip-lines on the distribution of cotton root and plant growing. With the space of drip-lines of 130 cm and 90 cm respectively, the distribution of cotton root system, height of cotton stem, and cotton leaves area were observed in cotton growing stages. The experiments results indicated that a large space of drip-lines resulted in large irrigation and soil deep seepage; soil moisture was non-uniform horizontally and the cottons at inside and outside rows grew non-uniformly; cotton root was thin, the density of root length was single-peak-parabolic distribution in horizontal and was largest in 14~28 cm soil layer over the soil depth. While a little space of drip-lines resulted in uniform soil moisture as well as the cottons planting at inside and outside rows; cotton root was thick, the density of root length was double-peak-parabolic distribution in horizontal and was largest in 0~14 cm soil layer over the soil depth Nevertheless, the growing performances of the cotton root, plant and leaves under the different space of drip-lines were similar respectively. These efforts are helpful to select the percentage of wetted soil volume and the space of drip-lines in the design of drip irrigation technique.
