Efficacy of biapenem combined with Xuebijing injection in the treatment of severe pneumonia and its effects on pulmonary function and inflammatory markers

Abstract：Objective To evaluate the clinical efficacy of biapenem combined with Xuebijing injection in the treatment of severe pneumonia(SP)and its effects on pulmonary function and inflammatory cytokine levels.Methods A total of 100 patients with SP treated at the First People's Hospital of Shangqiu from January 2022 to January 2024 were enrolled and randomly divided into two groups(n=50 each)using a random number table.The biapenem group received standard biapenem treatment,while the combination group received additional Xuebijing injection besides biapenem.Clin-ical efficacy,pulmonary function,blood gas indices,and inflammatory marker levels were compared between the two groups.Results The total effective rate in the combination group was significantly higher than that in the biapenem group(92.00％vs.76.00％,x2=4.762,P=0.029).Symptom resolution times for moist rales,cough,fever,and abnormal leukocyte counts were significantly shorter in the combination group(P＜0.05).After treatment,the combination group showed significantly better pulmonary function indicators,including forced vital capacity(FVC),forced expiratory volume in 1 second(FEV1),FEV1/FVC ratio,arterial oxygen saturation(SaO2),partial pressure of oxygen(PaO2),and oxy-genation index(all P＜0.05).Additionally,serum levels of tumor necrosis factor-alpha(TNF-α),procalcitonin(PCT),and C-reactive protein(CRP)were significantly lower in the combination group compared to the biapenem group(P＜0.05).Conclusion Biapenem combined with Xuebijing injection is highly effective in treating severe pneu-monia.This regimen significantly improves pulmonary function and blood gas parameters,and effectively reduces inflam-matory responses in patients.
