Abstract:Objective To investigate the correlation between serum homocysteine(Hcy)levels and hyperurice-mia(HUA)in the elderly, providing a reference for health management of HUA in older adults. Methods This study included 2 432 individuals aged 60 and above who underwent health examinations at a health management center in Nei-jiang from January 2021 to December 2023.Participants with missing data, abnormal values,or who had not undergone HUA and Hcy testing were excluded. Results The prevalence of HUA in this study was 26.5%.Significant differences were observed between the HUA and non-HUA groups in age, sex, body mass index(BMI),diastolic blood pressure(DBP),triglycerides(TG),high-density lipoprotein cholesterol(HDL-C),fasting blood glucose(FBG),Hcy,and serum uric acid(SUA)levels.Bivariate correlation analysis indicated a positive correlation between serum Hcy and SUA(r=0.2867,P<0.001).Logistic regression analysis, using serum Hcy quartiles, revealed that compared to the lowest quartile(QI),individuals in higher quartiles faced an increased risk of HUA:Q2(OR=1.565,95%CI:1.156-2.119),Q3(OR=2.639,95%CI:1.976-3.524),and Q4(OR=3.621,95%CI:3.621-6.358).After adjus-ting for age, sex,BMI,systolic blood pressure(SBP),DBP,total cholesterol(TC),TG,HDL-C,low-density lipo-protein cholesterol(LDL-C),and FBG,the results remained similar:higher concentrations in Q3(OR=1.826,95%CI:1.345-2.480)and Q4(OR=3.148,95%CI:2.323-4.265)indicated a greater risk for HUA.Receiver operat-ing characteristic(ROC)curve analysis identified a cutoff value of 13.4 μmol/L for serum Hcy;sensitivity was 67.24%,specificity was 58.67%,and the area under the curve(AUC)was 0.673(95%CI:0.654-0.692).Conclusion There is a positive correlation between serum Hcy levels and HUA in the elderly, with higher serum Hcy levels associated with an increased risk of HUA.Serum Hcy may serve as a potential biomarker for HUA,indicating that monitoring Hcy levels could reflect HUA status in older adults.
